Phyzelaphryne miriamae Heyer, 1977, Pap. Avulsos Zool., São Paulo, 31: 153. Holotype: MZUSP 49894, by original designation. Type locality: "Brasil: Amazonas; Igarapé Puruzinho at Rio Madeira".

English Names

Miriam's Frog (Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 83).

Distribution

Madeira, Purus, Jaú and Solimões river basins west of Maués, Amazonas, Brazil, with the easternmost record being Parque Rio Tapajós, 75 km southwest of Itaituba, Pará, Brazil; western and southernmost record being Cachoeira do Teotônio, Porto Velho, Rondônia, but the species is known to occur along most of the upper Madeira River; expected in northern Bolivia.

External morphology and the advertisement call were detailed in the original publication. Hoogmoed and Lescure, 1984, Zool. Meded., Leiden, 58: 88-92, resurrected Phyzelaphryne and provided a map of its distribution. Resurrected from the synonymy of Eleutherodactylus nigrovittatus by Hoogmoed and Lescure, 1984, Zool. Meded., Leiden, 58: 85, with which it had been synonymized by Lynch, 1980, Am. Mus. Novit., 2696: 1-24, and Lynch and Lescure, 1980, Bull. Mus. Natl. Hist. Nat. Paris, Sect. A, Zool., 2: 311. De la Riva, Köhler, Lötters, and Reichle, 2000, Rev. Esp. Herpetol., 14: 57, and Köhler, 2000, Bonn. Zool. Monogr., 48: 69, consider this species possibly to occur in Bolivia.
