Known only from the type locality (Cañahonda waterfall, municipality of Urrao, Antioquia, Colombia, 2320 m elevation) in the northern Cordillera Occidental.

In the Eleutherodactylus bellona group, along with Eleutherodactylus mars and Eleutherodactylus bellona, according to the original publication. In the subgenus Pristimantis bellona species group of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 118, and of Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 125.
