Distribution

Eastern Nigeria and western and southwestern Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon.

Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 297: 336. Revised by Amiet, 1981 "1980", Ann. Fac. Sci. Cameroun, 27: 69-224, who supplied information on life history and relationships. Removed from Phrynopsinae of Noble, 1931, Biol. Amph.: 518, to Astylosterninae by Laurent, 1946, Rev. Zool. Bot. Afr., 39: 337. Ohler, 1999, Alytes, 17: 73-80, provided a key to the species and recognized four species groups, the Leptodactylodon mertensi group (Leptodactylodon mertensi, Leptodactylodon erythrogaster, Leptodactylodon perreti, Leptodactylodon axillaris), Leptodactylodon bicolor group (Leptodactylodon bicolor), Leptodactylodon ornatus group (Leptodactylodon ornatus), and Leptodactylodon ovatus group (Leptodactylodon ovatus, Leptodactylodon boulengeri, Leptodactylodon ventrimarmoratus, Leptodactylodon albiventris, Leptodactylodon blanci, Leptodactylodon polycanthus). Channing, Rödel, and Channing, 2012, Tadpoles of Africa: 99–105, reported on comparative tadpole morphology.
