Dermophis costaricense Taylor, 1955, Univ. Kansas Sci. Bull., 37: 506. Holotype: KU 36343, by original designation. Type locality: "Cinchona, [Cantón de Alajuela, Provincia Alajuela,] Heredia Province [in error], Costa Rica". Savage, 1974, Rev. Biol. Tropical, 22: 85, corrected the type locality. Species name is a noun in apposition.

Atlantic slopes of the cordilleras of Tilarán, Central, and Talamanca, in Costa Rica at 1000 to 1300 m elevation.

Removed from the synonymy of Dermophis mexicanus by Savage and Wake, 2001, Copeia, 2001: 52-64, where it had been placed by Savage and Wake, 1972, Copeia, 1972: 680-695. Savage, 2002, Amph. Rept. Costa Rica: 839, provided a brief account. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 30–32, compared this species to others in Central America, provided maps, and photographs.
