Caecilia isthmica Cope, 1877, Proc. Am. Philos. Soc., 17: 91-92. Holotype: USNM 25188 according to Cochran, 1961, Bull. U.S. Natl. Mus., 220: 3. Type locality: "East side of the isthmus of Darien", Panama.

Removed from the synonymy of Caecilia tentaculata by Savage and Wake, 2001, Copeia, 2001: 56, where it had been placed by Boulenger, 1895, Proc. Zool. Soc. London, 1895: 406, this considered tentative by Taylor, 1968, Caecilians of the World: 443. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 29–30, compared this species to others found in Central America.
