Tylototriton vietnamensis Böhme, Schöttler, Nguyen, and Köhler, 2005, Salamandra, 41: 215. Holotype: ZFMK 80637, by original designation. Type locality: "vicinity of Dong Vanh Village, Luc Son Commune, Luc Nam District, Bac Giang Province, northern Vietnam (21° 12´ N, 106° 40´ E, approximately 250-300 m a.s.l.)".

Nguyen, Nguyen, Hồ, Le, and Nguyen, 2009, Tạp chí Công nghệ Sinh học, 7: 325–333, discussed the species and its distinctiveness from Tylototriton hainanensis. Stuart, Phimmachak, Sivongxay, and Robichaud, 2010, Zootaxa, 2650: 30, suggested that nominal Tylototriton vietnamensis may include more than one species (Tylototriton zieglieri being one of the recent segregates—DRF). Bernardes, Rödder, Nguyen, Pham, Nguyen, and Ziegler, 2013, J. Nat. Hist., London, 47: 1161–1175, discussed habitat and potential distribution. Hecht, Pham, Nguyen, Nguyen, Bonkowski, and Ziegler, 2013, Biodiversity J., 4: 507–552, reported a record from Tay Yen Tu Nature Reserve, Bac Giang Province, northeastern Vietnam and discussed the range. Sparreboom, 2014, Salamanders Old World: 378–379, reviewed the biology, characteristics, distribution, reproduction, and conservation of the species. Bernardes, Pham, Nguyen, Le, Bonkowski, and Ziegler, 2017, Salamandra, 53: 451–457, reported on morphometrics and ecology of a population in Dong Son–Ky Thuong Nature Reserve, Dong Son Commune, Hoanh Bo District, Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam. In the Tylototriton (Yaotriton) vietnamensis species group of Poyarkov, Nguyen, and Arkhipov, 2021, Taprobanica, 10: 4–22, who discussed phylogenetics. In the Tylototriton asperrimus group of Lyu, Wang, Zeng, Zhou, Qi, Wan, Li, and Wang, 2021, Vert. Zool., Senckenberg, 71: 697–710, who discussed phylogenetics.
