Comment

On the basis of the mtDNA tree of Martínez-Solano, Teixeira, Buckley, and García-París, 2006, Mol. Ecol., 15: 3375-3388, this taxon was removed from the synonymy of Lissotriton boscai by Dubois and Raffaëlli, 2009, Alytes, 26: 38, where it had been placed by Boulenger, 1882, Cat. Batr. Grad. Batr. Apoda Coll. Brit. Mus., Ed. 2: 18. See comment under Lissotriton boscai, from which this species was recently recognized, for relevant literature. Speybroeck, Beukema, and Crochet, 2010, Zootaxa, 2492: 3, were hesitant to recognize Lissotriton maltzani distinct from Lissotriton boscai pending further study of possible transition zones. Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 118, provided a brief account, photo, and map. Speybroeck, Beukema, Dufresnes, Fritz, Jablonski, Lymberakis, Martínez-Solano, Razzetti, Vamberger, Vences, Vörös, and Crochet, 2020, Amphibia-Reptilia, 41: 145, discussed the evidentiary basis for recognizing this taxon distinct from Lissotriton boscai. See comment under Lissotriton boscai for relevant literature. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 341–342, provided an account, summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
