Eurycea sphagnicola Wray, Means, and Steppan, 2017, Herpetol. Monogr., 31: 43. Holotype: UF178811, by original designation. Type locality: "‘‘Beautiful Bog,’’ 2.25 mi S of CR 4 and 0.15 mi W of Three Notch Trail, Blackwater River State Forest, Santa Rosa County, Florida, 30.8408338 N, 86.9433338 W".

Within 80 km of the Gulf Coast in Mississippi, Alabama, and the westernmost part of the Florida Panhandle, USA.

In the Eurycea quadridigitata complex according to the original publication. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 558–559, provided an account, summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
