Bolitoglossa (Magndadigita) tzultacaj Campbell, Smith, Streicher, Acevedo, and Brodie, 2010, Misc. Publ. Mus. Zool. Univ. Michigan, 200: 16. Holotype: UTA A-38590, by original designation. Type locality: "17.7 km above Jones on road to Finca Alejandria, Sierra de las Minas, 1800 m, Zacapa, Guatemala (15.116067° N, 89.614982° W)".

Southern slopes of the Sierra de las Minas near the junction of the departments of Zacapa, Izabal, and Alta Verapaz; the forest at 1800 m in an admixture of pine-oak forest and cloud forest.


In the Bolitoglossa (Magnadigita) morio group according to the original publication. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 40–69, compared this species with others from Central America and provided a map and photograph. Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 352, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. See comment under Bolitoglossa tenebrosa which may be conspecific.
