Bolitoglossa phalarosoma Wake and Brame, 1962, Contrib. Sci. Nat. Hist. Mus. Los Angeles Co., 49: 1. Holotype: BMNH 1897.11.12. 22, by original designation. Type locality: "Medellín, Departamento de Antioquia, Colombia . . . . The altitude of Medellín is 5,045 feet (1538 m)".

In the Bolitoglossa (Eladinea) adspersa group of Parra-Olea, García-París, and Wake, 2004, Biol. J. Linn. Soc., 81: 336; formerly in the Bolitoglossa phalarosoma group. See account by Brame and Wake, 1963, Contrib. Sci. Nat. Hist. Mus. Los Angeles Co., 69: 12. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 40–69, compared this species with others from Central America and provided a map and photograph. Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 343, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. Batista, Köhler, Mebert, and Veselý, 2014, Mesoam. Herpetol., 1: 98, doubted that the Panama records are applicable to Bolitoglossa phalarosoma. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 747–748, provided an account summarizing systematics (and suggesting the Panama records apply to an unnamed species), life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
