Bolitoglossa epimela Wake and Brame, 1963, Rev. Biol. Tropical, 11: 63. Holotype: UMMZ 119695, by original designation. Type locality: "a point on the Turrialba-Peralta road 6.2 miles northeast of the Río Reventazon bridge (approximately 7 miles east-northeast of Turrialba), at about 915 meters (3,000 feet) elevation, [Cantón de Turrialba,] Provincia de Cartago, Costa Rica". Savage, 1974, Rev. Biol. Tropical, 22: 85, commented on the type locality and restated as "1.5 km SW Chitaria at Río Chitaria on road between Turrialba and Peralta, Cantón de Turrialba, Provincia de Cartago; 775 m", Costa Rica.

Known from the type locality and near Tapantí, in humid premontane areas on the Atlantic slope of Cartago Province, central Costa Rica, 775–1550 m elevation.
