Confused with Batrachoseps relictus prior to its naming and the sister species of Batrachoseps kawia according to the original publication. See Fouquette and Dubois, 2014, Checklist N.A. Amph. Rept.: 96–97, for list of publications that confused this taxon with other species prior to its naming. Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 256–257, provided a brief account, photograph, and map. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 580–581, provided an account, summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
