Holotype: KUHE 6491, by original designation. Type locality: "Rokunohara, Mt. Hibayama, Saijo-cho, Shobara-shi, Hiroshima Prefecture (35°04'20"N, 133°04'18"E, alt. 850 m)", Japan.

Distribution

Known from montane areas on the backbone range of the Chugoku Mountains, western Honshu (Hyogo, Okayama, Hiroshima, and Tottori prefectures), Japan, 35 to 1216 m elevation.

Comment

Prior to its naming confused with Hynobius nebulosus according to the original publication. The population from Shimane Prefecture formerly associated with this name was named Hynobius kunibiki by Sugawara, Iwata, Yamashita, and Nagano, 2021, Animals, 11 (2187): 1–19. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 118, provided an account, summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
