Hynobius katoi Matsui, Kokuryo, Misawa, and Nishikawa, 2004, Zool. Sci., Tokyo, 21: 662. Holotype: KUHE 17946, by original designation. Type locality: "Mt. Takane-San (138° 11′ E, 34° 58′ N, alt. 750 m) in Fujieda-shi, Shizuoka Prefecture", Japan.

In the Hynobius naevius group according to the original publication. Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 72, provided a brief account, photo, and map. Sparreboom, 2014, Salamanders Old World: 69–71, reviewed the biology, characteristics, distribution, reproduction, and conservation of the species. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 114, provided an account, summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
