Rhacophorus monticola Boulenger, 1896, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., Ser. 6, 17: 395. Syntypes: "several specimens"—BMNH and NHMB; NHMB 1188 designated lectotype by Forcart, 1946, Verh. Naturforsch. Ges. Basel, 57: 131. Type locality: "Loka, about 3500 feet, and one from the north slope of the Bonthain Peak, 2600 feet", Celebes, Indonesia.

Not assigned to subgenus by Dubois, 1987 "1986", Alytes, 5: 77. See statement of geographic range, habitat, and conservation status in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 635. Wanger, Motzke, Saleh, and Iskandar, 2011, Salamandra, 47: 17-29, reported the species from central Sulawesi, Indonesia.
