Comment

Related to Rana weiningensis according to original publication. Fei, 1999, Atlas Amph. China: 168-169, provided a brief account, map, and figure. Fei, Hu, Ye, and Huang, 2009, Fauna Sinica, Amph. 3: 1112-1116, provided an account, figures, and map for China. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2010, Colored Atlas of Chinese Amph.: 298-299, provided a brief account including photographs. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2012, Colored Atlas Chinese Amph. Distr.: 340, provided an account, photographs, and a range map for China. Yuan, Zhou, Chen, Poyarkov, Chen, Jang-Liaw, Chou, Matzke, Iizuka, Min, Kuzmin, Zhang, Cannatella, Hillis, and Che, 2016, Syst. Biol., 65: 835, suggested on the basis of undisclosed evidence that this species is not a member of PseudoranaShen, 2014, Fauna Hunan, Amph.: 221–226, provided a detailed account for Hunan, China. Li, 2011, Amph. Rept. Guangdong: 44, provided a brief account for Guangdong, China, and photograph. See Matsui, Tanaka-Ueno, and Gao, 2001, Curr. Herpetol., Kyoto, 20: 77-84, for discussion of taxonomic history and evidence to place Rana zhengi as a member of the Rana temporaria group and rejection of a close relationship with Rana sauteri. Rana zhengi was redescribed by Zhao, 2000, Sichuan J. Zool., 19: 133-136. Che, Pang, Zhao, Matsui, and Zhang, 2007, Zool. Sci., Tokyo, 24: 71-80, suggested on molecular grounds that Rana zhengi is distantly related to other Chinese brown frogs and discussed its taxonomic history. Fei, Hu, Ye, and Huang, 2009, Fauna Sinica, Amph. 3: 1106, considered Rana zhengi to be a synonym of Rana johnsi, but did not comment on the evidence presented by Che et al., 2007. Yuan, Zhou, Chen, Poyarkov, Chen, Jang-Liaw, Chou, Matzke, Iizuka, Min, Kuzmin, Zhang, Cannatella, Hillis, and Che, 2016, Syst. Biol., 65: 835, confirmed that this species is not associated with PseudoranaWan, Lyu, Qi, Zhao, Li, and Wang, 2020, ZooKeys, 942: 141, placed Rana zhengi in the synonymy of Rana sangzhiensis on the basis of molecular evidence and delimited the Rana johnsi group to contain this species and Rana johnsi.  Wu, Shi, Zhang, Chen, Cai, Hoang, Wu, and Wang, 2021, ZooKeys, 1065: 101–124, included the species in a phylogenetic analysis of the Rana johnsi group.
