Rana (Papurana) aurata Günther, 2003, Mitt. Mus. Naturkd. Berlin, Zool., 79: 208. Holotype: ZMB 58694, by original designation. Type locality: "at 54 km along the Nabire-Mapia road, about 30 km SE of Nabire, 750 m a.s.l., 3° 29′ 517″ S, 135° 43′ 913″ E., Papua, Province of Indonesia". Note that the original latitude and longitudes are impossible and therefore in error and should be corrected to 3° 29.517′ S, 135° 43.913′ E (A. Allison, personal communication).

Vicinity of the Biological State of Pusppenssat, ca. 30 km southeast of Nabire, Papua (New Guinea), Indonesia.

Most similar to Rana volkerjane according to the original publication. Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 70, provided a brief account.
