Type locality: "from a stream near the Hmong Village of Khau Ria, in Du Gia commune, Yen Minh District, below Mount Muong Cha, Ha Giang Province, Vietnam (22° 54′ 27″ N, 105° 13′ 59″ E, ca. 800 m elevation)". Synonymy with Rana megatympanum by Stuart and Bain, 2005, Herpetologica, 61: 478-492; with Rana tiannanensis by Ohler, 2007, Alytes, 25: 59.

Southern Yunnan (Mangla, Pingbian, and Hekou counties) , China; Phou Dendin National Biodviersty Conservation area, Phongsaly Province, Laos; northern, north-central, and northeastern Vietnam in and around montane rivers as well as in the adjacent forest, 120-1000 m elevation
