Class: Amphibia > Order: Anura > Family: Ranidae > Genus: Clinotarsus > Species: Clinotarsus penelope

Clinotarsus penelope Grosjean, Bordoloi, Chuaynkern, Chakravarty, and Ohler, 2015, Zootaxa, 4058: 484. Holotype: Tadpole MNHNP 2000.4630 in stage 36, by original designation. Type locality: "Namtok Raman Forest Park (8°27’ N, 98°32’ E, WGS 84, about 30 m asl), Phang Nga Province, Thailand".

English Names

Hill Frog (Chan-ard, 2003, Photograph. Guide Amph. Thailand: 140).

Palebrown Stream Frog (Nutphund, 2001, Amph. Thailand: 121).

Peninsular Thailand from central Kachana Buri province south to Trang Province; presumably including the earlier records of Clinotarsus alticola from adjacent peninsular Myanmar.

With the naming of Clinotarsus penelope, based on larval characters, the literature of Clinotarsus alticola from Thailand must be presumed to apply to the newer species.  See account by Taylor, 1962, Univ. Kansas Sci. Bull., 43: 453-456 (as Rana alticola).  Chan-ard, 2003, Photograph. Guide Amph. Thailand: 140-141, provided a very brief account, map for Thailand, and photograph, as Rana cf. alticola. See identification table by Manthey and Grossmann, 1997, Amph. Rept. Südostasiens: 84-86, to compare this species to other ranids of the Sunda Shelf region, although this species was conflated with Clinotarsus alticola. In the original publication, the authors provided molecular evidence that possibly one more species of Clinotarsus will be named from the Tak-Kanchanaburi Province boundary area of Thailand.
