Distribution

Forested equatorial Africa from Nigeria and Cameroon south through Gabon and east throughout the Congo River Basin.

Frost, Grant, Faivovich, Bain, Haas, Haddad, de Sá, Channing, Wilkinson, Donnellan, Raxworthy, Campbell, Blotto, Moler, Drewes, Nussbaum, Lynch, Green, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 297: 119, considered Hymenochirus to be the sister taxon of remaining pipids. Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543-583, in their molecular study, considered Hymenochirus to be the sister taxon of Silurana + XenopusChanning, Rödel, and Channing, 2012, Tadpoles of Africa: 287–261, provided information on comparative larval morphology. Frétey, Dewynter, and Blanc, 2011, Clé de détermination, Amph.
