Known from widely separated localities in extreme northeastern Mato Grosso, south central Mato Grosso, and southeastern Mato Grosso, Brazil.

The sister species of Pithecopus hypochondrialis according to the original publication, where external morphology, molecular markers, and the advertisement call were discussed.
