Comment

Considered a subspecies of Phyllomedusa burmeisteri by Pombal and Haddad, 1992, Rev. Brasil. Biol., 52: 217–229, on the basis of continuous variation in color pattern, but subsequently distinguished as a species by Silva and Juncá, 2006, Zootaxa, 1113: 51–64, on the basis of advertisement call and larval differences. In the Phyllomedusa burmeisteri group of Faivovich, Haddad, Baêta, Jungfer, Álvares, Brandão, Sheil, Barrientos, Barrio-Amorós, Cruz, and Wheeler, 2010, Cladistics, 26: 259. Santos-Silva and Ferrari, 2012, Herpetol. Rev., 43: 300–301, provided a range extension in northeastern Bahia, Brazil, and commented on the range. Andrade, Haga, Carvalho, Martins, and Giaretta, 2018, Phyllomedusa, 17: 39–59, could not distinguish this species from Phyllomedusa burmeisteri on the basis of morphometrics or acoustic parameters but did not suggest a taxonomic change. Juncá, 2006, Biota Neotrop., 6: 1–17, briefly summarized the presence of this species in the Serra da Jibóia region, Bahia, Brazil, and its habitat. Röhr, Camurugi, Paterno, Gehara, Juncá, Álvares, Brandão, and Garda, 2020, Canad. J. Zool., 98: 495–504, reported on the evolution and causes of variability of advertisement call.
