Lowland rainforest over much of New Guinea, but apparently absent from the eastern half of Papua New Guinea.

The unjustified emendation (under Article 32.c.ii of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, 1984) of the specific name to turpicula has had widespread use. See brief account by Menzies, 1976, Handb. Common New Guinea Frogs: 49-50. Günther, 2003, Faun. Abh. Staatl. Mus. Tierkd., Dresden, 24: 212, provided a record for the Wondiwoi Mountains of western Papua, Indonesia. Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 233-234, provided a brief account.
