Type locality: not mentioned in original publication; stated to be Imerina between 47° and 48° E, 19° S [Madagascar], by H. Ludwig in Boettger, 1882, Abh. Naturwiss. Ver. Bremen, 7: 178. Preoccupied by Polypedates microtympanum Günther, 1858, in Rhacophorus.

In the Boophis microtympanum group of Blommers-Schlösser and Blanc, 1991, Faune de Madagascar, 75: 316-320. Glaw and Vences, 2007, Field Guide Amph. Rept. Madagascar, Ed. 3: 150-151, provided an account and noted an unnamed similar species.
