Leptodactylus cunicularius Sazima and Bokermann, 1978, Rev. Brasil. Biol., 38: 904. Holotype: WCAB 48000, by original designation, now MZUSP 73685, according to de Sá, Grant, Camargo, Heyer, Ponssa, and Stanley, 2014, S. Am. J. Herpetol., 9(Spec. Issue 1): 27. Type locality: "Km 114/115 da Estrada de Vespasiano a Conceição do Mato Dentro, Serra do Cipó, Jaboticatubas, Minas Gerais, Brasil".

In the Leptodactylus gracilis group (= Leptodactylus fuscus group), according to the original publication. Reviewed by Heyer, Heyer, and de Sá, 2008, Cat. Am. Amph. Rept., 845: 1–5. Eterovick and Sazima, 2004, Anf. Serra do Cipó: 85–86, provided a photograph and brief account. Cruz, Feio, and Caramaschi, 2009, Anf. Ibitipoca: 120–121, provided photographs and a brief account for Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca, Minas Gerais, Brazil. In the Leptodactylus fuscus species group of de Sá, Grant, Camargo, Heyer, Ponssa, and Stanley, 2014, S. Am. J. Herpetol., 9(Spec. Issue 1): 1–123, who provided a summary of the relevant literature of this species on p. 27–28 (adult and larval morphology, identification, advertisement call, and range). Eterovick, Souza, and Sazima, 2020, Anf. Serra do Cipó: 1–292, provided an account, life history information, and an identification scheme for the Serra de Cipó, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Carvalho, Seger, Magalhães, Lourenço, and Haddad, 2021, Zool. Scripta, 50: 300–317, reported on the phylogenetics and cryptic lineages within the species as part of the Leptodactylus plaumanni clade of the Leptodactylus fuscus group. Pezzuti, Leite, Rossa-Feres, and Garcia, 2021, S. Am. J. Herpetol., 22 (Special Issue): 1–109, described and discussed larval morphology and natural history.
