Hyperolius olivaceus Peters, 1876, Monatsber. Preuss. Akad. Wiss. Berlin, 1876: 120. Syntypes: ZMB 8829 (2 specimens) according to Bauer, Günther, and Klipfel, 1995, in Bauer et al. (eds.), Herpetol. Contr. W.C.H. Peters: 44. Type locality: "Limbareni am Ogowe" [= Lambarene, Gabon].

Ecol., 26: 52235244, who also discussed biogeography. Previously considered a junior synonym of Hyperolius fuscigula by Boulenger, 1882, Cat. Batr. Sal. Coll. Brit. Mus., Ed. 2: 124. Recognized by Ahl, 1931, Das Tierreich, 55: 293. Synonymy by Laurent, 1943, Ann. Mus. R. Congo Belge, Tervuren, Zool., 4: 67, 80. Synonymy considered tentative by Lötters, Gossmann, Obame, and Böhme, 2001, Herpetofauna, Weinstadt, 23: 28-29. Gilbert and Bell, 2017 "2018", Biol. J. Linn.
