Central Panama, Caribbean lowlands and valleys of the Río Cauca and Río Magdalena, as well as the upper Amazon drainage in central Colombia and western Venezuela, and northern Venezuela in the Caribbean lowlands and drainage of the Río Orinoco. 


Resurrected from the synonymy of Hyla crepitans by Kluge, 1979, Occas. Pap. Mus. Zool. Univ. Michigan, 688: 11, where it had been placed by Peters, 1872, Monatsber. Preuss. Akad. Wiss. Berlin, 1872: 212; Boulenger, 1882, Cat. Batr. Sal. Coll. Brit. Mus., Ed. 2: 352. Also described as new by Schmidt, 1858, Denkschr. Akad. Wiss. Wien, Math. Naturwiss. Kl., 14: 243. See account by Duellman, 2001, Hylid Frogs Middle Am., Ed. 2: 861-862. Lynch and Suárez-Mayorga, 2001, Caldasia, 23: 491–507, discussed the Colombian range of the species. In the Hypsiboas faber group of Faivovich, Haddad, Garcia, Frost, Campbell, and Wheeler, 2005, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 294: 87. Armesto Sanguino, Esteban, and Torrado, 2009 "2008", Herpetotropicos, Mérida, 5: 57-63, reported this species in Norte de Santander, northeastern Colombia. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 232–235, provided a brief summary of natural history for the species of Hypsiboas in Central America and provided a range map and photograph for this species. Méndez-Narváez, Ortiz-Navia, and Bolívar-García, Check List, 10: 409–410, reported the species in the Cauca Valley in the Departamento de Valle de Cauca, Colombia. Palacio Baena, Muñoz Escobar, Gallo Delgado, and Rivera-Correa, 2006, Anfibios y Reptiles del Valle de Aburrá: 75–77, provided a brief account and photograph. Escalona, Prieto-Torres, and Rojas-Runjaic, 2017, Check List, 13(5): 671–681, provided new records for Venezuela and mapped the entire range in Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela.
