Comment

In the Hypsiboas polytaenius clade of the Hypsiboas pulchellus group, and previously confused with Hypsiboas polytaenius, according to the original publication. Luna-Dias, Ruggeri, and Carvalho-e-Silva, 2019, Herpetol. Notes, 12: 537–542, reported on larval oral cavity morphology and provided a record for the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Faivovich, Pinheiro, Lyra, Pereyra, Baldo, Muñoz-Saravia, Reichle, Brandão, Giaretta, Thomé, Chaparro, Baêta, Widholzer, Baldo, Lehr, Wheeler, Garcia, and Haddad, 2021, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 155 (106981): 15, had placed this taxon into the synonymy of Boana polytaenia, but seemingly reluctantly. Shortly thereafter Vasconcellos, Colli, and Cannatella, 2021, J. Biogeograph., 48: 311, in a study that paralleled that of Faivovich et al. (2021) recovered Boana bandeirantes as the sister taxon of Boana stenocephala and relatively distant from Boana polytaenia, albeit with a somewhat different set of gene sequences, alignment methods, and tree-building methods. Confronted with this kind of disagreement I (DRF) think the conservative path forward is to recognize Boana bandeirantes separate from Boana polytaenia, pending more work on the ground. Manzano, Takeno, and Sawaya, 2022, Zootaxa, 5178: 453–472, reported on the advertisement call.
