Rana spinosa verrucospinosa Bourret, 1937, Annexe Bull. Gen. Instr. Publique, Hanoi, 1937: 26. Syntypes: LZUH (originally 12 specimens) B. 195 (Chapa), B160-164, Z240-41 (Fan-Si-Pan), B17, B51-52, Z75 (Tam-Dao); now two of these MNHNP 1948.132 and 1948.134 according to Guibé, 1950 "1948", Cat. Types Amph. Mus. Natl. Hist. Nat.: 39; 1948.132 designated lectotype by Dubois, 1987 "1986", Alytes, 5: 44. Type localities: "Chapa", "Fan-Si-Pan", and "Tam-Dao", Vietnam. Restricted type locality (of lectotype) not noted by Dubois, 1987 "1986", Alytes, 5: 44, but presumably "Chapa".

English Names

Verrucosa Spiny Frog (Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2012, Colored Atlas Chinese Amph. Distr.: 472). 

Distribution

Mountains of southern Yunnan, and northern and central Vietnam and southern Laos (although likely to be found throughout the connecting mountains), 250-2300 m elevation.

Comment

Removed from the synonymy of Quasipaa boulengeri (as Paa) by Inger, Orlov, and Darevsky, 1999, Fieldiana, Zool., N.S., 92: 23, where it had been placed by Dubois, 1987 "1986", Alytes, 5: 44. Nguyen, Ho, and Nguyen, 2005, Checklist Amph. Rept. Vietnam: 25, provided specific localities for Vietnam and (p. 149) a photograph. Hu, Chen, and Dong, 2005, Sichuan J. Zool., 24: 340-341, documented the presence of this species in Yunnan, China. Fei, Hu, Ye, and Huang, 2009, Fauna Sinica, Amph. 3: 1348-1351, provided an account (as Paa verrucospinosa) for China, figures, and map, and included this species in their monotypic Paa verrucospinosa group.
