Prior to the revision of Grant, Frost, Caldwell, Gagliardo, Haddad, Kok, Means, Noonan, Schargel, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 299, placed in the Colostethus brunneus group (Group II) of Rivero, 1990 "1988", Mem. Soc. Cienc. Nat. La Salle, 48: 3-32, or the Colostethus subpunctatus group of Rivero and Serna, 1989 "1988", Caribb. J. Sci., 24: 137-154. Acosta-Galvis and Rueda-Almonacid, 2004, in Rueda-Almonacid et al. Santos, Coloma, Summers, Caldwell, Ree, and Cannatella, 2009, PLoS Biol., 7(3)e56: 0001-0014, identified their sample of this species as belonging to Hyloxalus; this requires verification. Páez-Vacas, Coloma, and Santos, 2010, Zootaxa, 2711: 69, referred this TNHC specimen as Hyloxalus sp.
