Ceratophrys joazeirensis Mercadal de Barrio, 1986, Amphibia-Reptilia, 7: 320. Holotype: NHMW 4582, by original designation. Type locality: "Joazeiro (Estado de Bahía), NE de Brasil".

Distribution

Brazilian states of Bahia (Joazeiro), Paraiba (Municipality of Araruna), Rio Grande do Norte (Santa Maria Municipality), Pernambuco (Municipality of Triunfo), Alagoas, Sergipes, and Minas Gerai. 

Comment

An octoploid species most closely related to Ceratophrys ornata according to original publication. In the subgenus Ceratophrys by implication. Vieira, Arzabe, and Vieira, 2006, Check List, 2(2): 28-29, provided records from Paraíba, Brazil. Santos, Silva, Campos, and Quirino, 2009, Herpetol. Rev., 40: 107, provided the first record from Pernambuco, Brazil. Vieira, Silva, and Arzabe, 2006, Zootaxa, 1320: 57-68, discussed cranial morphology and karyology in light of relationships to other Ceratophrys. Jorge, Kokubum, Sales, and Freire, 2012, Herpetol. Rev., 43: 297-298, provided a record for Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Zaidan and Leite, 2012, Zootaxa, 3540: 65-66, reported on the advertisement call. Faivovich, Nicoli, Blotto, Pereyra, Baldo, Barrionuevo, Fabrezi, Wild, and Haddad, 2014, S. Am. J. Herpetol., 9: 207–227, suggested that this species is the sister taxon of Ceratophrys aurita.
