Distribution

Caribbean lowlands of Colombia and Venezuela; isolated population in Amazonian Venezuela, o to 500 m elevation.

See accounts by Rivero, 1961, Bull. Mus. Comp. Zool., 126: 83; and Cochran and Goin, 1970, Bull. U.S. Natl. Mus., 288: 364–366. Barrio-Amorós, 1999 "1998", Acta Biol. Venezuelica, 18: 41, commented on the range in Venezuela. Lynch, 1982, Syst. Zool., 31: 166–179, reported the Venezuelan Amazonian population which had previously been confused with Ceratophrys cornuta. Faivovich, Nicoli, Blotto, Pereyra, Baldo, Barrionuevo, Fabrezi, Wild, and Haddad, 2014, S. Am. J. Herpetol., 9: 207–227, suggested that this species is the sister taxon of Ceratophrys cornuta. Barrio-Amorós, 2004, Rev. Ecol. Lat. Am., 9: 19, 29, considered the population at Puerto Ayacucho, Venezuela. to represent Ceratophrys calcarata, rather than Ceratophrys cornuta as previously identified. Acosta-Galvis, 2012, Biota Colomb., 13: 213–231, reported the species in the Departamento Sucre, northern Colombia, and briefly discussed habitat.
