Comment

Considered a synonym of Bufo funereus by Laurent, 1964, Publ. Cult. Companhia Diamantes Angola, 67: 131, but retained as a distinct species by Tandy and Keith, 1972, in Blair (ed.), Evol. Genus Bufo. Poynton and Broadley, 1988, Ann. Natal Mus., 29: 463-464, discussed the taxonomic problems and previous confusion in the treatment of this species. See also Channing, 2001, Amph. Cent. S. Afr.: 68, for account. Channing and Howell, 2006, Amph. E. Afr.: 72–73, provided a brief account for East Africa.
