Comment

In the Rhinella margaritifera group according to the original publication. In a confusing note Avila-Pires, Hoogmoed, and Rocha, 2010, Bol. Mus. Parense Emilio Goeldi, Cienc. Nat., 5: 64, placed this taxon as a synonym of Rhinella (as Bufo) margaritifer, citing that the naming of Rhinella martyi was based on several misapprehensions. Avila-Pires, Hoogmoed, and Rocha, 2010, Bol. Mus. Parense Emilio Goeldi, Cienc. Nat., 5: 64, designated the illustrated frogs in Seba, 1734, Locuplet. Rer. Nat. Thesaur. Descript. Icon. Exp. Univ. Phys. Hist., 1: pl. 71, fig. 6, 7, as lectotypes of Rana margaritifera (which Avila-Pires et al., 2010, suggested was not seperable from suggested was not separable from Rhinella martyi, although these animals as figured are not separable on any published basis from most species of Rhinella of the Rhinella margaritifera group and remain of very vague geographical origin), rejected without published evidence that Rhinella martyi is distinct. Lavilla, Caramaschi, Langone, Pombal, and de Sá, 2013, Zootaxa, 3646: 256, considered this synonymy premature. See account for Surinam population by Ouboter and Jairam, 2012, Amph. Suriname: 70-73. See Cole, Townsend, Reynolds, MacCulloch, and Lathrop, 2013, Proc. Biol. Soc. Washington, 125: 379-381, for brief account and records for Guyana.
