Bufo chavin Lehr, Köhler, Aguilar, and Ponce, 2001, Copeia, 2001: 217. Holotype: MUSM 20028, by original designation. "Palma Pampa (09° 53′ 14″ S, 75° 53′ 21″ W; elev. 3010 m), located approximately 20 km southeast of Chaglla, along the road from Chaglla to Tomayrica, property of P. Baumann, Distrito Chaglla, Provincia de Pachitea, Departamento de Huánuco", Peru.

Eastern Andean slopes of central Peru in the region of the type locality (Distrito Chaglla, Provincia de Pachitea, Departamento de Huánuco), 2600-3072 m elevation.

In the Bufo veraguensis group according to the original publication. Chaparro, Pramuk, and Gluesenkamp, 2007, Herpetologica, 63: 203-212, considered this species to be the sister of former Rhamphophryne festae.
