Distribution

Intermediate elevations along the Pacific versant of extreme eastern Chiapas (Mexico) and western Guatemala, 200 to 2200 m elevation.

Mendelson, Mulcahy, Williams, and Sites, 2011, Zootaxa, 3138: 1-34, suggested that Incilius tacanensis is a members in an unnamed monophyletic group that includes Incilius alvarius, Incilius occidentalis, Incilius mccoyi, and Incilius tacanensisOliver-López, Woolrich-Piña, and Lemos-Espinal, 2009, Fam. Bufonidae Mex.: 93–94, provided an account for Mexico (as Ollotis cristata). Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 104–115, compared this species to others in Central America and provided a range map and photograph. McCarthy, Shinn, Luna-Reyes, and Mendelson, 2022, ZooKeys, 1102: 149–161, redescribed the species, summarized its biology and conservation status, and provided a range map.
