Atelopus erythropus Boulenger, 1903, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., Ser. 7, 12: 555. Holotype: BMNH 1947.2.14.65 (formerly 1903.6.30.7), according to Lötters, Haas, Schick, and Böhme, 2002, Salamandra, 38: 166. Type locality: "Santo Domingo, Carabaya, S.E. Peru, 6000 feet [= 1800 m]".

English Names

Carabaya Stubfoot Toad (Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 39).

Distribution

Cloud forest on the Amazon versant of the Andes of Peru in the departments of Huánuco, Cusco, Puno, and Ucayali, 800–2500 m elevation; possibly in adjacent Bolivia.

Presumably in the Atelopus flavescens group of Lynch, 1993, Alytes, 11: 77–87. De la Riva, Köhler, Lötters, and Reichle, 2000, Rev. Esp. Herpetol., 14: 58, and Köhler, 2000, Bonn. Zool. Monogr., 48: 69, consider this species possibly to occur in Bolivia. Lötters, Haas, Schick, and Böhme, 2002, Salamandra, 38: 166, on the other hand, regarded the holotype as the sole representative of the species but did not mention relevant papers after 1998, suggesting that this manuscript was written earlier than 2000.
