Southeastern Costa Rica to western Colombia (Cordoba and Antioquia south to central Nariño), 15 to 350 m elevation; Gorgona I.

Removed from a monophyletic Craugastor by Lynch, 2000, Rev. Acad. Colomb. Cienc. Exact. Fis. Nat., 24: 130. See account by Savage, 2002, Amph. Rept. Costa Rica: 256-257, who included this species in his Eleutherodactylus fitzingeri series, Eleutherodactylus bufoniformis group. In the Strabomantis bufoniformis species series, of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 132. Crawford, Cruz, Griffith, Ross, Ibáñez D., Lips, Driskell, Bermingham, and Crump, 2013, Mol. Ecol. Resources, 13: 1005–1018, detected potential cryptic lineages within this taxon. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 140–191, provided a key to the genera and species of Brachycephaloidea (= Craugastoridae, Eleutherodactylidae) in Central America and provided maps and photographs of the species, including this one. Montes-Correa, Jiménez-Bolaño, Collazos-Astudillo, and Renjifo, 2023, Reptiles & Amphibians, 30 (e19521): 1–4, discussed the range and provided a dot map of the range along with a new record from the Municipality of Magüí Payán, Santo Domingo Village, Nariño Department, Colombia, 42 m elevation.
