In the Eleutherodactylus melanostictus group, similar to Eleutherodactylus andi, according to the original publication. In the Eleutherodactylus (Craugastor) fitzingeri group of Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 223. Removed from a monophyletic Craugastor and from the Eleutherodactylus fitzingeri group by Lynch, 2000, Rev. Acad. Colomb. Cienc. Exact. Fis. Nat., 24: 130. Savage, 2002, Amph. Rept. Costa Rica: 226, included this species in his Eleutherodactylus fitzingeri series, Eleutherodactylus fitzingeri group.
