In the Eleutherodactylus (Eleutherodactylus) binotatus series, unassigned to species group according to Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 234. In the Ischnocnema guentheri species series of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 27. Canedo and Haddad, 2012, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 65: 610-620, suggested on the basis of molecular evidence that this species falls within the Pristimantis conspicillatus group and may represent a species complex. In the Pristimantis conspicillatus species group of Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 125.
