Distribution

Upper slopes of the Cordillera Occidental at elevations of 1550–3190 m in the provinces of Imbabura and Pichincha, Ecuador.

In the Eleutherodactylus unistrigatus group, Eleutherodactylus surdus assembly, nearest Eleutherodactylus barycuus, according to Lynch, 1980, Proc. Biol. Soc. Washington, 93: 336-337, who redescribed the species. See account by Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 136-137, who placed it in the Eleutherodactylus (Eleutherodactylus) conspicillatus series, Eleutherodactylus surdus group.
