Comment

Lynch, 1979, Misc. Publ. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 66: 32, noted that the frog regarded as Eleutherodactylus cruentus by Cochran and Goin, 1970, Bull. U.S. Natl. Mus., 288: 426, was unnamed. Reviewed by Savage, 1981, Proc. Biol. Soc. Washington, 94: 413-420, who addressed previous misidentifications in the literature. In the Eleutherodactylus (Eleutherodactylus) martinicensis series, Eleutherodactylus unistrigatus group of Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 223. In the less inclusive Eleutherodactylus cruentus group of Savage, 1981, Proc. Biol. Soc. Washington, 94: 413. See comment under Eleutherodactylus laticlavius. Savage, 2002, Amph. Rept. Costa Rica: 267-268, provided an account and placed this species in his Eleutherodactylus martinicensis series, Eleutherodactylus cruentus group. Miyamoto, 1984, J. Herpetol., 18: 256-263, reported on relationships of this species if other members of the Eleutherodactylus cruentus group in Central America. In the Pristimantis (Hypodictyon) ridens species series of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 114. Crawford, Cruz, Griffith, Ross, Ibáñez D., Lips, Driskell, Bermingham, and Crump, 2013, Mol. Ecol. Resources, 13: 1005–1018, detected potential cryptic lineages within this taxon. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 140–191, provided a key to the genera and species of Brachycephaloidea (= Craugastoridae, Eleutherodactylidae) in Central America and provided maps and photographs of the species, including this one. Salvador and Cossel, 2016, Mesoam. Herpetol., 3: 548–556, reported on vocalization.
