Arthroleptis nguruensis Poynton, Menegon, and Loader, 2009 "2008", Afr. J. Herpetol., 57: 64. Holotype: MTSN 8137, by original designation. Type locality: "at the Masaki side of the Nguru South Forest Reserve, Tanzania, 06° 03′ 51.1″ S, 37° 30′ 33.3″ E, 1790 m".

Most closely related to Arthroleptis tanneri, Arthroleptis affinis, and Arthroleptis nikeae, according to the original publication. Harper, Measey, Patrick, Menegon, and Vonesh, 2010, Field Guide Amph. E. Arc Mts. Tanzania and Kenya: 46–47, provided a brief account for the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania.
