Pacific slopes the Andes in Colombia; throughout the Guyanan and Amazonian region of Venezuela and the Guianas and in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil.
See account by Lötters, Jungfer, Henkel, and Schmidt, 2007, Poison Frogs: 44-55. Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543-583, in their study of Genbank sequences, suggested that Rheobates (their exemplar being Rheobates palmatus) is the sister taxon of all remaining Aromobatidae, thereby suggesting that Anomaloglossinae is paraphyletic with respect to Aromobatinae and Allobatinae. Blackburn and Wake, 2011, In Zhang (ed.), Zootaxa, 3148, 3148: 39-55, discussed the status of this taxon and did not recognize this nominal subfamily because of allobatinae paraphyly.
