Hyloxalus fuliginosus Jiménez de la Espada, 1870, J. Sci. Math. Phys. Nat., Lisboa, 3: 59. Syntypes: not stated; MNCN 276 (2 specimens), according to Savage, 1968, Copeia, 1968: 758, who designated as lectotype the smaller specimen (now MNCN 1586, according to González-Fernández, García-Díez, and San Segundo, 2009, Spixiana, München, 32: 272. Type locality: "in Ecuador; ad nemores pagi S. Jose de Moti", Cantón de Quijos, Napo Province, Ecuador. Discussed by Savage, 1968, Copeia, 1968: 753, who suggested that this locality is "San José Mote Viejo . . . almost due east of Volcán Sumaco, at 0° 32′ S and 77° 25′ W in Provincia de Napo; it lies on a ridge projected east from Volcan Sumaco just north of the valley of the Río Suno, at about 1200 m elevation".

Probably contains a number of undescribed species, according to Rivero, 1991, Caribb. J. Sci., 27: 12. See brief account by Coloma, 1995, Misc. Publ. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 87: 33. Barrio-Amorós and Fuentes-Ramos, 1999, Acta Biol. Venezuelica, 19: 2, reported this species from Venezuela, but did not provide a precise locality. See comment regarding type locality by Rivero and Almendáriz, 1992 "1991", Politecnica, Quito, 16: 118-119. Barrio-Amorós, 2004, Rev. Ecol. Latino Am., 9: 7, reported on distribution and relevant literature.
