Phyllobates latinasus Cope, 1863, Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia, 15: 48. Type(s): ANSP, lost, according to Barbour and Noble, 1920, Bull. Mus. Comp. Zool., 63: 399; USNM 50198 designated neotype by Savage, 1968, Copeia, 1968: 755. Type locality: "Truando region, [Departamento Chocó,] New Granada [=Colombia]"; neotype from "Panamá: Provincia de Darién, Cana". The locality data for the neotype are based on the assumption, now understood to be incorrect, that the ledger entries for USNM 50181-96 also applied to 50197-200. However, it is clear from the original ledger that the only data dittoes from the previous entries were country (Panama) and donor, S. W. Gotte, pers. comm. in Grant, 2004, Am. Mus. Novit., 3444: 20, who discussed and restricted the collection locality of the neotype to "Panama, probably on Cerro Pirre above Santa Cruz de Cana, Darién Province".

Peracca, 1904, Boll. Mus. Zool. Anat. Comp. Univ. Torino, 19 (465): 17, considered this a junior synonym of Colostethus pulchellus. See comment by Taylor, 1952, Univ. Kansas Sci. Bull., 35: 643. See account by Savage, 1968, Copeia, 1968: 754-755. This taxon has a complicated and difficult nomenclatural history as discussed by Grant, 2004, Am. Mus. Novit., 3444: 1-24.
