Prior to the revision of Grant, Frost, Caldwell, Gagliardo, Haddad, Kok, Means, Noonan, Schargel, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 299, placed in group VI (Colostethus fuliginosus group) of Rivero according to the original publication. Barrio-Amorós, 2004, Rev. Ecol. Latino Am., 9: 7, reported on distribution and relevant literature.
