Type locality: "approximately 5 miles upstream from the mouth of the Raposo River and approximately 20 miles south of Buenaventura, Departament of Valle, Colombia". The original publication placed it in the less inclusive Eleutherodactylus diastema group, with Eleutherodactylus diastema, Eleutherodactylus hylaeformis, and Eleutherodactylus vocator. Savage, 2002, Amph. Rept. Costa Rica: 268-269, provided an account and placed this species in his Eleutherodactylus martinicensis series, Eleutherodactylus cruentus group.
