Syntypes: BMNH 1947.2.17.24 (formerly 82.7.13.3) and 1947.2.17.22-23 (formerly 82.7.13.4-5), also MCZ 3021-22 (on exchange from BMNH according to Barbour and Loveridge, 1929, Bull. Mus. Comp. Zool., 69: 281); BMNH 1947.2.17.22 designated lectotype by Lynch, 1981, Misc. Publ. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 72: 7. Type localities: "Tortorillas, Chimboraza [Province] (13,200 feet)", and "Cotocachi (13,000 feet)", Imbaburas Province, Ecuador; restricted to Tortorillas by lectotype designation. ( Boulenger, 1882, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., Ser. 5, 9: 466, refers to "Two specimens from Pichincha (11,000 to 12,000 feet), one from the valley of Collanes (12,500 feet), one from Cotocachi (13,000 feet) and two from Tortorillas, lower slopes of Chimborazo (13,200 feet)", so if the second description actually appeared first, some change in type status will be warranted. Distribution

Elevations of 2750-4400 m on the Nudo de Pasto of southern Colombia (2745-4400 m elevation) and in the western and eastern Andes of Ecuador south to the Desierto de Palmira.
