Syntypes: ZSM 1045/0 (2 specimens), lost, according to Lynch, 1980, Herpetologica, 36: 179, Glaw and Franzen, 2006, Spixiana, München, 29: 174, and ZMB 7814 according to Bauer, Günther, and Klipfel, 1995, in Bauer et al. (eds.), Herpetol. Contr. W.C.H. Peters: 46. Type locality: "Pastassathal" (= Pastaza Valley); corrected to "Pastassa-Tal [= Pastaza Valley] (Colombia)" by Nieden, 1923, Das Tierreich, 46: 402. Locality considered in error by Lynch, 1980, Herpetologica, 36: 175-189.

Syrrhopus areolatus Boulenger, 1898, Proc. Zool. Soc. London, 1898: 122. Syntypes: BMNH 1947.2.15.38-39 according to Lynch, 1980, Herpetologica, 36: 187. Type localities: "Cachabé [= Cachabí], a small village [about 10 miles southeast of Concepción] on the river of that name, on the N.W. Coast, in the Prov. Esmeraldas", Ecuador, and "Chimbo", also noted in the original publication as "Puente del Chimbo, the railway terminus about 70 miles from Guayaquil, at an elevation of about 1000 feet", Ecuador. Lynch and Myers, 1983, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 175: 515, discussed Cachabé and noted that it is not the same as San Javier de Cachabí. Synonymy by Lynch, 1980, Herpetologica, 36: 179.

Transferred from Syrrhophus to Eleutherodactylus by Lynch, 1968, Herpetologica, 24: 291, who provided an account and also placed it in the Eleutherodactylus unistrigatus group. See comment under Eleutherodactylus scolodiscus. Redescribed (as Eleutherodactylus areolatus) by Lynch, 1970, Trans. Kansas Acad. Sci., 73: 177-180. See account by Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ.
